சென்னை மேற்கு ச்டண்ட்ஸ் as a thriving trade and commerce center in the city. The northern regions spread out as a continuos land strip lying adjacent to the sea, that is Bay of Bengal. The regions in the north are connected with the rest of the city by few major road links and a railway line. The railway line proceeds further north and into the nearby district of Nellore. The presence of the second major port here makes it an important trade centre. The northern localities house some of the reputed manufacturing companies of India. The automobile industries located here are attractions in themselves. Perambur, leading automobile producing area in the city, has many a times been referred as the Detroit of India. At Tondiarpet in நோர்த் சென்னை is located the fishing harbour. The harbour makes up a popular attraction in the north. The region is inhabited by a local population, most of which are employed in the popular industries located here. The eastern boundary of the northern localities is limited by the famous Buckingham Canal.

The western areas of Chennai largely form the residential places in the city. These localities also feature many commercial activities. The suburbs located to the west of Chennai include Porur, Ayanavaram, Kilpauk, Anna Nagar and Vadapalani. One more region included in the Chennai metropolitan area is that of Ambattur. This locality borders the city premises and is administered by the adjoining district, Tiruvallur.The western areas are less congested compared to other regions.
