The metropolitan area, which is about 1,177 square kilometers, is greater than that of the city area, 174 square kilometres. The metropolitan area encompasses the three districts - Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvalluvar. The city has been divided into five talukas which are Egmore - Nungambakkam, George Town - Tondiarpet, Mamballam - Triplicane, Perambur - Purasawallakam. However, for references and clear understanding the metropolis has been categorized as North, South, West, Central and Around (East is left out and is marked by the sea). The regions falling in West and South are better known for their residential places. Chennai Central is a popular commercial centre and the North an industrial centre. There are many satellite towns some of which have been mentioned in the Around section. Mammalapuram (Mahabalipuram), Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Sri Perumpudur and Arakkonam constitute as satellite towns.
